A former detective has suggested one idea to tackle the rise in youth crime in Queensland after fed-up locals in one town confronted alleged thieves outside their home before police intervened.

A mob of about 100 locals in Rockhampton, seven hours north of the Sunshine Coast, showed up at a house on Sunday where they believed the alleged thieves lived.

A frustrated group of residents from the Queensland town of Rockhampton banded together to confront alleged thieves outside a home amid the ongoing crime wave. "There's centres like this around Australia already stretching as far out as the Kimberley," he told Sunrise on Monday morning. "The model, and I am talking about in the Kimberley, they have 70,000 hectares of property where there's cattle. So the people going out there are learning farming skills, how to look after the cattle," the former police officer added.
