Senior lawyers given special licences to represent attorney-general in contempt case brought by the father of late fireman. FMTNews ZainurZakaria AmbigaSreenivasan

Senior lawyers Zainur Zakaria and Ambiga Sreenivasan appeared today before judicial commissioner Meor Hashimi Abd Hamid in the contempt proceeding.

SHAH ALAM: Senior lawyers Zainur Zakaria and Ambiga Sreenivasan have been given special licences to represent Attorney-General Tommy Thomas in his contempt case brought by the father of the late fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim. Contacted by FMT, Zainur confirmed the appointments and said he and Ambiga appeared today before judicial commissioner Meor Hashimi Abd Hamid in the contempt proceeding. At the outset of the proceeding, lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, appearing for Adib’s family, asked the judge to record that he had full faith that the attorney-general’s officers could conduct the case on his behalf.

Meor Hashimi is hearing an appeal by Thomas against the Aug 27 decision of coroner Rofiah Mohamad to allow leave to begin committal proceedings by Mohd Kassim Abdul Hamid, 64.Haniff submitted that Rofiah’s ruling had not finally disposed of the AG’s right because the substantive hearing of the committal proceeding had not started.

Zainur submitted that the striking out application lacked merit as a ruling was not made in the course of a trial or proceedings. On July 16, Kassim filed an ex parte application for a committal order against Thomas for allegedly insulting the court through the filing of an affidavit by the Attorney-General’s Chambers on April 3 which indicated that Adib’s death was not caused by injuries sustained.
