Two Indigenous teenagers want their peers to shake off a feeling of cultural 'shame', while a Yes23 campaigner says a Voice to Parliament will help First Nations children feel proud of their heritage.

Young people listening to speakers at the Yes23 campaign community event in Dubbo.abc.net.au/news/teens-say-shame-about-culture-stifles-voice-to-parliament/102863040Some young Indigenous people feel so ashamed about their culture it is stifling open discussions about the Voice, according to teens at a community event.

Naarah Kennedy and Tyra Moore Towney, both aged 14, attended a Yes campaign event in Dubbo recently to find out more about what the Voice would mean for them."I think everything is known as shame nowadays, so no-one really likes to contribute to anything really," Naarah said. "It's good to show people that there's different ways to educate people — some people can have a voice, some people can show culture through art," said Naarah, who likes to keep her mob's stories alive through dance."It's not shaming getting up and representing culture, and showing people that even though it was so long ago we've still got a voice and we still practise our culture.

Ms Moore said she was concerned that a lack of open conversation in communities about the Voice was leading to confusion and the spread of misinformation.
