Broncos winger Corey Oates has revealed he almost ended up in Parramatta’s clutches, before he set about becoming one of Brisbane’s most prolific flyers in their history.

As he prepares to celebrate his 200th NRL game on Saturday against the Bulldogs, the 28-year-old admitted that as a teenager from country Queensland he contemplated an early career move to his father’s beloved Eels.Oates’ decision to turn down the move and venture to Red Hill has paid dividends, sitting fifth in the club’s all-time try scorers stakes .

However, Oates has etched his name into Broncos folklore, overcoming a host of injuries and a form dip that culminated in his 2021 axing. And Oates, reportedly in the midst of securing his future beyond his 2023 contract, remains hopeful of many more exploits to come, as he strives to become a one-club man.“I just got really lucky and at 15 went from there, I almost went to Parra but it was never going to happen,” Oates said of his initial move to the Broncos.

Oates’ journey to the 200-game milestone has been one fraught with physical setbacks, and he admits that his inability to take advice on board hindered him early in his career. However, he now believes he has found the appropriate balance, as he charts his course towards cementing his status as one of the NRL’s leading wingers.
