Versatile, hard-working infielder who ranks 19th in the majors in WAR since 2020 will get $80 million over seven years
These are the kinds of deals that work for all sides and that make everyone feel good.Machado also said this about the seven-year, $80 million contract signed by Jake Cronenworth:“This is what baseball is about right there, seeing those type of stories. I mean, yeah, you have special players and the superstars in the game. But seeing a guy like that come from a small hometown in Detroit and becoming who he is, it’s special.
The $80 million Cronenworth is due from 2024 through 2030 — a $2 million signing bonus, $7 million next season, $11 million in ’25 and $12 million a year for the final five seasons of the pact — is no pittance. But neither is it in the echelon of some of the other deals the Padres have given to their star players recently en route to amassing MLB’s third-highest payroll in 2023 and committing $608 million to just seven players over the next five years.
Said Preller: “I think Jake is one of the best players in the league. He’s a guy for us that there’s just a lot of belief and faith in. With any player when you give somebody an extension, you commit to one of your players for a number of years, you’re really betting on the person.
