Runners have taken to social media to honour Samantha Murphy, vowing to “complete” the run she never could.
while out on a morning jog, local women runners have noticed a change: the six kilometre path around the city’s Lake Wendouree is unusually busy.
“I have heard on the grapevine that it has been a busy running spot, it seems to have happened since … it seems noticeable.” Two hashtags, #runforsamanthamurphy and #finishsamanthasrun, attracted many posts on social media on Friday as recreational runners from Queensland to Jervis Bay and regional Victoria vowed to “complete” the run in honour of Murphy.
Another member posted a picture with the note: “This morning’s run for a future where women can run without fear”, and another posted a bush track scene with the message “14km trail run for Samantha. I hope she can feel the arms of the running community around her today.” The other was 42-year-old Rebecca Young, a mother of five who died in an apparent murder-suicide, at the hands of her partner, Ian Butler.
“This whole thing has shaken us all up a bit; it’s about sympathy for all the families involved, the young boy’s family as well, it’s very sad for them,” said Martin, who has run for more than 30 years and not had any safety issues.
