Plans for a groundbreaking World Club Cup have taken a significant leap forward, according to aEuropean rugby bosses have reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding. This paves the way for a competition that could see elite clubs from both hemispheres clash on the global stage.Domestic leagues have made a remarkable concession. They have agreed to move their finals to May. This clears the way for the World Club Cup to be played as a standalone event in June 2028.
A well-placed source told MailOnline: “Those weekends need to go somewhere. That is a big thing for France, the French have been very protective of their Top 14 final but there is a desire to do something different every four years.”The European Professional Club Rugby organises the Champions and Challenge Cups. They will use their eight available weekends for four rounds of pool matches and the new tournament.
The Champions Cup will proceed as usual until the quarterfinals. At that point, the top eight European teams will be diverted into the World Club Cup.The eight qualifying clubs from the Champions Cup will be drawn against the top six Super Rugby sides. Additionally, two teams from Japan will be added.
This format promises exciting clashes between Europe’s finest and southern hemisphere powerhouses. These include the Crusaders, Brumbies, and Hurricanes.Clubs that fail to qualify for the World Club Cup will not be left out. They will compete in a simultaneous Super Challenge Cup. This ensures high-stakes rugby across the board during this period.The World Club Cup is planned to take place every four years. The 2028 edition will be hosted in the northern hemisphere.
Moreover, plans are well advanced for a women’s version of the Champions Cup. It is slated to begin in 2026 with four teams, including the winners of the Premiership Women’s Rugby. The competition will expand over time. A meeting is scheduled for June to finalise the details.
