When pilot Yared Getachew’s stops in Nairobi were brief, his mother would meet him at the airport for lunch before bidding him farewell. Last Sunday, he didn’t make it.
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia—Yared Getachew’s favorite route to pilot on Ethiopian Airlines was Addis Ababa-Nairobi. It was a flight home.
Born and raised in the Kenyan capital to an Ethiopian father and Kenyan mother, Mr. Getachew moved to Addis Ababa in 2007 and trained as a pilot at the prestigious Ethiopian Airlines aviation academy, graduating in 2010. His father, a prominent dentist, had suggested the experience would bolster the young man’s ties to Ethiopia.
