Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani said that film executives are reluctant to cast non-white villains and that he would like a chance as a bad guy.
Kumail Nanjiani says movie executives are reluctant to cast non-white actors in villainous roles. Nanjiani rose to prominence by playing Dinesh on HBO's critically acclaimed sitcom Silicon Valley from 2014 to 2019.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Esquire, Nanjiani discussed what he saw as limits being put on his acting career because he's not white. The Pakistani-American actor said that if Welcome To Chippendales were not based on a true story, the leading role would have gone to a white actor. Nanjiani thinks that while Hollywood is trying to diversify, they're uncomfortable making a brown guy the bad guy because of what kind of message they might be sending.
I think that Hollywood now—even though they're trying to be more diverse—is still weird... [Not casting non-white actors in villainous roles is] just as limiting as anything else. I want to play more bad guys. [Sebastian Stan] does these big Marvel movies, and then he'll play a psychopath. I was told that's going to be hard because people don't want to cast non-white people as bad guys.
The biggest role he's landed since departing Silicon Valley, however, is as Kingo in the MCU movie Eternals. Kingo is Japanese in the comics, which means that the producers at Marvel wanted and believed in Nanjiani enough to alter the character for him. Instead of a Samurai movie actor, Kingo became a Bollywood star on the big screen.
While he has been vocal about his desire to return to the MCU or the Star Wars universe, Nanjiani hasn't announced any major acting gigs in the near future. He has, however, developed and produced the anthology series Little America, which focuses on immigrant-centric stories and recently aired season 2 on Apple TV+.
