JUST IN | LoadShedding to jump to Stage 4 until Monday morning | Fin24

Load shedding will jump to Stage 4 from 10:00 on Saturday, and will last until 05:00 on Monday, Eskom has announced.

"Since this morning three generating units at Tutuka Power Station as well as two Kusile Power Station generating units tripped, necessitating the escalation in the stage of loadshedding. The delay in the return to service of Koeberg Unit 2 has exacerbated the capacity shortages," Eskom said. Stage 2 loadshedding will then continue to be implemented at 05:00 – 22:00 daily until Saturday night.

Some 4 872MW in power output is out due to planned maintenance, while another 13 983MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.Eskom has cautioned the public that its generation system remains constrained and Stage 2 load shedding could be implemented on Friday night, or during peak times on Saturday and Sunday.

During this period, the probability of load shedding will increase, said Eskom. In addition, the breakdown of two generation units at Hendrina power station and the delay in returning a generating unit each at Kendal, Komati, Kusile and Tutuka power stations during the past 24 hours have put a severe strain on the power generation system.

During the same period, Eskom teams have returned a unit each at Arnot and Tutuka power stations to service. While a generation unit each at Kriel, Majuba and Tutuka power stations is expected to return to service over the next 24 hours, this will still be insufficient to stave off load shedding for Thursday, Eskom said.

Currently, 4 550MW is out on planned maintenance, while another 14 182MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.Stage 2 load shedding might be required at short notice from 18:00 to midnight on Monday. Breakdowns at the Majuba, Tutuka and Kriel power stations have put a severe strain on the power generation system, Eskom said.

It is due to much improved generation capacity and the lower weekend demand, as well as a full recovery in emergency generation reserves, 571MW are out on planned maintenance, while another 15 624MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.Load shedding will be pushed to Stage 4 on Thursday during the evening peak from 16:00 to 24:00, Eskom said on Wednesday evening. "It is anticipated that Stage 2 will [also] be implemented [from] 05:00 to 24:00 on Friday," Eskom added. Eskom is implementing Stage 2 load shedding from 16:00 to 24:00 on Wednesday and Thursday.

Eskom currently has 2 986MW out on planned maintenance, while another 15 513MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. Several regulations will have to be managed to enable government's package to respond to the energy crisis. Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, in turn, shared that Eskom intends to fund its maintenance internally first."My view is that Eskom must find the cash within its own resources, and then we will see what needs to be done." Gordhan stressed that dealing with overpricing by suppliers can help Eskom save a lot of money.

So far the energy crisis committee, which includes officials from Eskom has already started meeting regularly and eight work streams have been established to ensure coordination across government, said Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele. The briefing has ended.Gordhan said an intervention of getting additional power online could take between 12 months and 36 months to achieve.
