ESKOM LIVE | Load shedding to escalate to Stage 4 on Tuesday morning
Stage 4 at the weekend allowed some diesel levels for be replenished. Oberholzer: We are ramping up planned maintenance as we head into summer.
This is due to additional breakdowns overnight, and Eskom being unable to replenish the emergency generation reserves. "During this weekend, critical planned maintenance at Hydro de Cahorra Bassa in Mozambique, Lethabo, Majuba, Matimba and Camden power stations will be carried out in preparation for the week ahead."
Additional load shedding is needed to preserve the pumped storage dam levels, part of the emergency generation reserves. Eskom currently has 4 588MW on planned maintenance, while another 15 204MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. Stage 2 load shedding will be rolled out from 16:00 until 22:00 on Tuesday night and will continue daily from 05:00 until 22:00 until Saturday, Eskom said in a statement on Tuesday.
"The cold front expected during the weekend is also anticipated to result in increased demand for electricity, adding to the capacity constraints," Eskom said. "During the same period, Eskom teams have returned to service a generating unit each at Kriel and Matla power stations. Eight generating units are expected to return to service by Monday evening."
Some 4 550MW in power generation is out on planned maintenance, while another 14 637MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.Eskom has announced that Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 to midnight on Tuesday evening. "The breakdowns of a generation unit each at the Kriel, Majuba, Matla and three units at Arnot Power Station during the last 24 hours, as well as delays in returning units to service at Kusile, Lethabo and Tutuka power stations have put a severe strain on the power generation system," Eskom said in a statement.
Stage 2 load shedding may be required at short notice should any further significant breakdowns occur. The generation system is still vulnerable to breakdowns and load shedding may be required. Eskom, therefore, urges the public to continue using electricity sparingly. "The delay in returning a generation unit to service each at Arnot, Koeberg and the Kusile power stations, as well as the unplanned outage of a generation unit each at Camden, Medupi and two units each at Grootvlei, Hendrina and Majuba power stations, have exacerbated the capacity constraints," Eskom said. Eskom currently has 2 931MW on planned maintenance, while another 15 051MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.
Ministers of the Energy Crisis Committee briefed the media on Monday on steps being taken to achieve the objects of the power plan, announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week. To strengthen the power utility's operations, Gordhan added that former Eskom managers would mentor younger Eskom employees by allowing the transference of skills and knowledge sharing. In order to rollout renewable energy power as quick as possible, Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Barbara Creecy shared plans to streamline the environmental impact assessment process to have projects get off the ground quicker.
