Singer Ernie Zakri reflects on her emotional journey through the years of participating in the prestigious Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL) competition. Initially sensitive and affected by wins and losses, she has matured to embrace the stage as a platform for artistic expression. Despite the pressure and expectations, Ernie focuses on delivering her best performance and cherishes the opportunity to connect with her audience.
Ernie Zakri, a 33-year-old singer, admits that she used to be a highly emotional and sensitive individual, especially when it came to the Anugerah Juara Lagu ( AJL ) stage. Having frequently participated in the prestigious competition, Ernie stated that as a human, she couldn't avoid feeling sadness if she didn't win any AJL trophies, which could disappoint fans. 'I used to be very sensitive and emotional. I would once be sad, stay in my room, and cry if I didn't win.
But as I grew older and perhaps gained more experience, all of that taught me a lesson. I eventually see the AJL stage as a place for me to express my work. I learn to perform it with all my heart. Whatever comes, the decision or whatever, that's later on.', she said during an interview with Utusan Malaysia recently. However, the singer stated that she didn't want to burden her mind with things beyond her control. 'The most important thing is for me to give the best performance on that stage. That's what I try to put in my head so that I don't feel down if I don't win. But, of course, I still have hope of winning. I just don't want it to disrupt my thinking, so I think just continue singing well.', she added. Ernie also rejected the notion that the AJL stage has become her 'meal ticket' considering that the competition will see her participation every year. For Ernie, it's unfair to assume that everything is easy for her just because her involvement can be seen every year. 'If everyone could see behind the scenes how all the competing singers try their best, we never have an easy time brainstorming and producing work. Because we have too many expectations or assumptions from people that we want to fulfill. But ultimately, I can't forget that I have to be myself too. 'If I just follow all the expectations of everyone, if they were all gathered, it would make my head spin. So every year, it's still brainstorming and still trying something new that I may have never done before.', she explained. She is set to compete with the song 'Aura' at the AJL ke-39 on February 16th. Besides Ernie, the competition will also feature nine other songs, including 'Sengaja' by Amir Masdi, 'Puas Sudah' by Aina Abdul, 'Terus Bersinar' by Hafiz Suip, 'Saksama' (Akim & The Majistret), 'Hening Rindu' (Marsha Milan), 'Pujaanku' (Masdo & Aisyah Aziz), 'Bukan Lagi Kita' (Nadeera), 'Risiko' (Benzoloo, Tuju, MK-Kclique), and 'Diam' (Hael Husaini)
