Manchester United have spent huge sums since hiring Erik ten Hag but the Dutchman believes much more in needed before they can become the team he pictured when he arrived

Manchester United have spent £530million in the transfer market since Erik ten Hag became manager - yet according to the Dutchman himself they are only half-way through the rebuild he envisioned when he arrived at Old Trafford.

Despite investing heavily each summer, United's finances have meant the club has not spent a single penny in either of the winter transfer windows of Ten Hag’s reign. Ten Hag has since returned to Old Trafford after being given a vote of confidence by club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to see £115million spent on Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussar Mazraoui. The club are also in the market for a new central midfielder.

Chief executive Omar Berrada, Director of football Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox agree with the manager’s assessment that Brazilian veteran Casemiro and teenager Kobbie Mainoo cannot be expected to cope with the demands of a campaign that will see United compete in the Europa League without reinforcements.

Almost £50million was recouped in departures - and a similar amount has been raised this summer by selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Greenwood, Willy Kambwala and Alvaro Fernandez.
