President Erdogan's remarks on massacre of Muslims in Christchurch were made 'in a historical context of attacks against Turkey,' Turkish presidency says, following criticism from New Zealand and Australia
Erdogan, in his speech to mark 104 years since the Canakkale victory, had said "those attacking us are still testing the patience and resolve of Turkey despite a century gone by," angering New Zealand and Australia.
Altun said, "The terrorist's manifesto not only targeted Erdogan himself but also the Turkish people and the Turkish state.""As he [Erdogan] was giving the speech at the Canakkale commemoration, he framed his remarks in a historical context of attacks against Turkey, past and present." Just over a century ago, thousands of soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps fought alongside the British and its allies against Turkish forces.
The area has become a site of pilgrimage for visitors who honour their nations' fallen in graveyards halfway around the world on ANZAC Day every April 25.
