Polls show Erdogan's right-wing alliance edging out the opposition bloc in the parliamentary ballot. theSun theSundaily election politics Erdogan Turkey

Supporters of Turkish President and Leader of the Justice and Development Party, Recep Tayyip Erdogan gather near a security checkpoint to access his campaign rally in the Sultangazi district of Istanbul, on May 12, 2023. AFPPIX: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan readied Friday to meet his hardcore supporters in the final countdown to the toughest election challenge of his two-decade rule.

The opposition was helped by the withdrawal of a third-party candidate Thursday who was hurting Kilicdaroglu's efforts to hand the Turkish leader his first electoral defeat. The 69-year-old also conceded that he was having a tough time winning over younger voters who have no memories of the corruption and economic chaos that ravaged Turkey under secular governments in the 1990s.

Erdogan's frank admissions hint at a growing realisation that he might not be able to pull out one of his trademark come-from-behind wins. Kurds who once put trust in his efforts to end their cultural persecution are now also overwhelming backing Kilicdaroglu's campaign. He appeals on his followers to “crush the ballot boxes” and accuses the West of bankrolling his opponents in an effort to undermine Turkey’s sovereignty. Some veteran Turkey watchers view the vote as an existential battle for Turkey's democratic future after years of crackdowns on dissent.
