ERCOT expects grid to pass first test of summer as demand could soar to record highs
The state grid manager, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, is projecting power demand could climb above 82,500 megawatts on Friday afternoon as residents and businesses crank up the air conditioning. ERCOT expects there to be slightly more than enough electricity supply available to meet demand, with capacity at 87,066 megawatts..
ERCOT releases a seasonal report at the beginning of each summer estimating peak demand, which this year is set at 82,739 megawatts. The report expects there to be enough power supply through the summer, as long as there’s not a rare occurrence of sweltering temperatures, widespread natural gas and coal plant outages and low renewable generation.
The grid operator last summer underestimated demand in its seasonal report, putting the expected peak at 77,317 megawatts. ERCOT officials issued calls for energy conservation as it became apparent demand would exceed that number, and ultimately the lights – and the air conditioning – stayed on.
