Regardless, those 51 long years in the doldrums must have felt indeterminable for female fans of the sport — just ask any England supporter about those long years of hurt since that triumphant day at Wembley. Comedians Badiel and Skinner even wrote a song about it. So far in Australia, England struggled to regain the flow that saw them become European Champions for the first time in their history last year.Five of their key players from that team were no longer available through a combination of injury and retirement.

And, although that was eased by the demolition of China to end the group stage, the 120 nerve-shredding minutes against Nigeria —Coach Sarina Wiegman said she had aged 10 years during that contest. Didn't we all.
