Inside Tony’s Place Pizza in downtown Valparaiso, some women were sobbing. Others were there with their families, getting one last picture before it closed. The bar was buzzing with old friends sharing stories.
Some couples had their first date at Tony’s. Others brought their young kids to Tony’s for their first pizza experience.It was their second home.The bar at Tony's Place sits empty after closing it's doors nearly 68 years after open, on Friday, August 25, 2023.

He also owned a candy store and helped manage a family-owned apartment complex.They lived in a Bronx neighborhood that was mob-controlled.In 1953 or 1954, Mary insisted they leave for a better environment for Tony and his older brother, Roger.The family packed its belongings and headed west. It’s a seldom-told story about living around the mob. Many good families left to get away from the criminal element.
For four years, Anthony drove the truck in the morning and worked at his restaurant until midnight. Mary would help. Their last purchase was a house in the alley behind the building. That allowed them to create a monstrous 325-seat restaurant with a full bar.
