New York Fed's regional manufacturing index hits six-month high

What happened: The new-orders index climbed 2.2 points to 9.7, and the shipments index gained 7.7 points to 16.3.

Inventories unwound, with that index diving 12.5 points to negative 4.1. Prices both paid and received fell slightly, and the index on the number of employees fell 7.2 points to 4.7. The big picture: Manufacturing has been one of the weak points of the economy this year, so this report stands out as a possible sign of better things to come — or, perhaps, an outlier.

The decline in the inventories index suggests that some of the buildup in stockpiles amid U.S. trade disputes over Chinese goods as well as steel and aluminum may have unwound this quarter. Market reaction: Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.82% were pointing lower on Wednesday, with data on retail sales also being released and showing a 0.2% decline.Steve Goldstein Steve Goldstein is MarketWatch's Washington bureau chief. Rust Belt Town Protests Construction Of New Truck Stop That Would Obstruct Views Of State PenitentiaryRust Belt Town Protests Construction Of New Truck Stop That Would Obstruct Views Of State PenitentiaryYOUNGSTOWN, OH—Collectively rising up against the threat to their rust belt community, the citizens of Youngstown, a former steel and foundry center, were protesting Tuesday the construction of a truck stop that would obstruct views of the nearby state penitentiary. “That penitentiary has been the symbolic heart of our community ever since it was built. They can’t put up some fancy new truck stop right in front of it,” said protester and longtime resident Neil Mauer regarding the proposal to construct a Love’s Travel Stop & Country Store in a location that directly interferes with sightlines of the beloved prison for those living in the city’s largest residential neighborhood. “That penitentiary is a part of us. The last thing we need is a bunch of out-of-town truck drivers hogging the remarkable views of our prison. We shouldn’t have to drive half an hour to the park on McGuffey Road to see it just because some millionaire truck stop owner wanted the best location in town.” At press time, protestors were dismayed to learn that Pilot Flying J had plans to build a truck stop that would totally block the view of the old brake pad factory.
