A new study finds longer emergency room wait times for women and people of color

Women from age 18 to 55"waited longer" and"received a less thorough evaluation for a possible heart attack than men" in their age group, an American Heart Association Wednesday said. People of color were also found to have"waited longer before being seen in the ER than white adults with chest pain."

The AHA identified chest pain as the"most frequent" symptom among heart attack patients, though the association noted women can face additional symptoms in conjunction with chest pain. The AHA pointed to earlierin 2021 that said more than 6.5 million U.S. emergency room visits every year are due to chest pain. The guidance identified chest pain as the second most frequent reason patients seek emergency treatment, while injuries are the most common reason for emergency room visits.

A new study found women and people of color face longer wait times than white men when seeking emergency room treatment for chest pain. Above, a first responder sanitizes a stethoscope at the Pro Health Urgent Care coronavirus testing site on April 30, 2020, in Wantagh, New York.

"In a recent survey of women conducted by the American Heart Association, only 51 percent of women identified chest pain as a symptom of heart attack, and only 54 percent of women said calling 911 was the first thing they would do if they thought they were having a heart attack," Reynolds toldpublished in September 2020 that assessed how women's awareness about coronary heart disease changed between 2009 and 2019.

"There is much work to be done to educate women about how to recognize heart attack warning signs and what to do if they happen," Reynolds added.
