The energy market operator has flagged a potential shortfall in electricity later today following an expected surge in demand.

The estimated $200 million replacement of the 420-megawatt C4 turbine has also been further delayed and is not expected to come on line until May, two years after the catastrophic failure of the power station.

Under mounting social and economic pressure, several generators have announced plans to accelerate the closure of fossil fuel plants., citing the construction of a new interconnector cable that is set to plunge the generator into deeper losses.Although there has been a wave of new renewable energy projects announced, executives including Rio Tinto chief executive Jakob Stausholm have warned thestruggled to overcome issues such as social licence, land acquisitions and policy flux.
