Former president Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at a campaign event Tuesday in Racine, Wis. That is about 24 miles south of Milwaukee, where Republicans are expected to formally designate Trump as their presidential nominee at their July convention. Last week, according to a Punchbowl News report, Trump called Milwaukee a “horrible city” during a closed-door meeting with Republican lawmakers.
Trump later sought to explain his comment by referring to crime and falsely implying he won the battleground state in 2020. He did not. “I love Milwaukee,” Trump told a Fox News reporter. “I have great friends in Milwaukee. But it’s, as you know, the crime numbers are terrible. … We have to be very careful. But I was referring to also the election, the, the ballots, the, the way it went down. It was very bad in Milwaukee. Very, very bad.
