A 62-year-old woman from Kulai, Malaysia, fell victim to a sophisticated impersonation scam, losing a staggering RM439,444 after being tricked by a caller posing as a police officer. The suspect manipulated the victim, claiming her phone number was linked to money laundering activities and coerced her into transferring her funds to two new accounts.
An elderly woman from Kulai suffered a loss of RM439,444 after being tricked by an individual posing as 'Sergeant Fatihah' from Bintulu Police Station, Sarawak. Kulai District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee, said the 62-year-old victim was contacted by the suspect on January 20, informing her that her phone number was listed in money laundering activities.
The call was then transferred to a man who claimed to be 'Inspector Hafiz' from Bukit Aman and asked for her contact information to be submitted to Bank Negara for an investigation to clear her name from any criminal cases. Then, on January 24, the victim was instructed to place her ATM card outside her house and was also told to transfer all her money into two new accounts opened at the suspect's directive. The victim only realized she had been deceived when her child checked her account and found that all the money had been withdrawn. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of imprisonment for between one and ten years, caning, and a fine upon conviction. - UTUSA
