An elderly man has died in regional Queensland after being thrown from a boat into the Burnett River.

According to 9 News, the 85-year-old who died had suffered a cardiac arrest after going into the water.

9 News said bystanders were able to pick the man up and perform CPR on him until paramedics arrived, however he later died at the scene. "The passers-by performed CPR on the first gentleman, they took him to a nearby boat club where an was located and used, however, he did pass away at the scene," Nigel Jones from Queensland Ambulance Service said.

Water Police are investigating the fatal tragedy, with assistance from Maritime Safety Queensland as it's not yet known how the boat turned. Anyone who witnessed what happened is urged to come forward and contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
