The husband and wife were asleep in their southern Sydney home when three masked men broke in through the front before threatening the couple to hand over their belongings and plundering the house.

A man and woman were attacked in their Carlton residence on Edward Street late Tuesday night when three men allegedly intruded into their property through the front entrance.

After breaking into the house, one of the three invaders first set upon the woman, who was sleeping in the downstairs lounge room at the time. Police say the three men were wearing dark clothing at the time of the invasion along with face-masking gear. The thieves only made it 15 metres down the street before crashing the car due to not knowing how to drive a manual transmission vehicle, Nine News said.Emergency crews arrived to the Carlton home about 11pm following reports of the invasion where the 81-year-old man was found with minor injuries. The 76-year-old woman did not sustain injuries but has been hospitalised as a precautionary measure.
