The El Camino Real pitcher and catcher have built a strong bond through inside jokes and a determination to win another City Section title for the school.

Two words kept El Camino Real softball pitcher Brooke DeSmet and catcher Cynthia Carrillo connected in their Los Angeles City Section Open Division semifinal game Tuesday:DeSmet instructed Carrillo to say the phrase as somewhat of a secret code for an issue related to her curveball. Sure enough, at one point in the game, the catcher put her hand on her hip, bent her elbow and moved her arm like a chicken wing.

Softball players often say they’re at their best when they’re playing loose; the ideal setting bubbling over with laughter and lightheartedness. ECR, with 17 City Section titles under its belt, seems to have mastered that duality going into the Open Division championship game against Kennedy on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Cal State Northridge.

While they have similarities in ability level at their respective positions, their personalities, at least on the surface, are very different. DeSmet is vibrant and bold, while Carrillo is serenely confident.
