ERNEST JOHN “EJ” OBIENA proved true to himself in Stockholm on Sunday by clearing 5.82 meters not only to clinch silver behind world record holder Armand Duplantis but more importantly clinch a ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The Olympic and world champion easily won gold with a 6.05-meter effort, while Norway’s Pal Haugen Lillefosse settled for the bronze with 5.72 meters.Obiena also raised to bar to 5.95 but missed twice.Obiena thus became the first Filipino to qualify for next year’s July 26-August 12 Paris Games. He made 5.81 meters in 2019 for his first Olympics in Tokyo 2020.
Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino congratulated Obiena for a job well done. “The talk before the competition was would it be canceled. It was 14 degrees with heavy, ice-cold rains coming down,” Lafferty said. “Competition was delayed. Pole vault was delayed for two and a half hours.”
