Kota Kinabalu: An environmental group said eight sites in Sabah are experiencing extreme severe and severe coral bleaching.

Reef Check Malaysia ’s programme manager Adzmin Fatta said 63 sites across the State have been actively monitored through efforts with Sabah Parks, the Borneo Marine Research Institute and local conservation groups.“One falls under the Extreme Severe Bleaching category , seven are categorised as Severe Bleaching , 16 are in the Moderate Bleaching category , 34 four show Mild or Low Bleaching , and five sites show No Bleaching ,” he said in a statement citing preliminary findings.

“Although the impact from bleaching was not as bad as other sites in Sabah, other impacts in Darvel Bay from human activities like fish bombing, trash pollution, ghost nets and anchoring pose additional threats to these reefs.”Meanwhile, he said the team has removed 263 Crown-of-Thorns starfish which can damage the corals.

“Last year, a total of 3,550 COTs were successfully removed from Darvel Bay waters through a collaborative effort,” he said.
