Egypt allows 800 Palestinians to leave Gaza for umrah
About 2,500 pilgrims are authorised to leave Gaza via Egypt for the haj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, each year, to undertake one of the five pillars of Islam. – EPA pic, March 3, 2019.
SOME 800 Palestinians today crossed from the Gaza Strip into Egypt on the initial stage of a pilgrimage to Mecca, the first time since 2014 that Egyptian authorities have granted visas for such a trip. The pilgrims, who left around dawn, are to be met by buses on the Egyptian side that will bring them to Cairo airport, from where they will fly to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, said a Palestinian official at the Rafah crossing in the Gaza Strip.
