Struggling to make waves in an otherwise sleepy primary race for a relatively obscure statewide post? Just, post a video of it on TikTok, and watch your campaign take off.

That’s the Sarah Stogner playbook. The 37-year-old attorney used her six seconds of fame to get her name out in the GOP primary for the Texas Railroad Commission against a well-financed opponent, and it worked wonders. Stogner squeaked into a runoff in a crowded field with incumbent Wayne Christian, 71, who fell three points shy of the majority needed to win outright.

While Stogner’s campaign tactics are certainly unorthodox, they belie her knowledge of the oil and gas industry and her passion for landowners’ rights. These qualities make her a strong candidate for a staid agency whose role as the state’s oil and gas watchdog requires a more nuanced approach to its other job, to promote the industry, than current commissioners seem capable of. We recommend runoff voters give her a chance to make her case as the Republican nominee this fall.

We did not endorse Stogner in March, in part because we liked longtime oil and gas worker Dawayne Tipton’s focus on operator safety and accountability but also becauseStogner’s friendship with landowner Ashley Williams Watt could present a conflict. Watt, Stogner’s client and landlord, has publicly criticized the commission for ignoring well blowouts on her land.

By contrast, Christian shamelessly takes donations from companies he is supposed to regulate. The Chronicle reported in February that Christian had overruled agency staff who warned against permitting an oil and gas waste facility near a major aquifer. Three days after voting to approve the permit, in late 2020,Under Christian’s stewardship, the Railroad Commission has allowed industry to all but regulate itself.
