The former executive director of SA Digital Connects would bring expertise and attention to the persistent digital divide in San Antonio.
Marina Alderete Gavito, a candidate for City Council District 7, would build consensus and fluency on tech issues.Although City Council District 7 is an open seat, the race has a clear favorite.— former Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Bexar County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez, state Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, numerous members of City Council — and outpaced other candidates in fundraising.
We also recommend Gavito. She is tech savvy, having also worked at Rackspace and USAA and serving as the founding executive director at Tech Bloc. She struck us as someone who could build consensus on the council, bringing together disparate groups such as the public safety unions, neighborhood associations and business leaders — and this is reflected in that aforementioned long list of endorsements.
There has been some controversy in this race. Gavito’s father, Joe Alderete, represented District 7 from 1977 to 1985 and is an Alamo Colleges trustee. He was caught on video removing a sign belonging to Sandragrace Martinez, a candidate in this race. Martinez skipped our candidate meeting . Gavito called the incident an unfortunate mistake and said her campaign’s policy is to not touch other candidates’ signs.
