The city has to be proactive in supporting small businesses.SAN ANTONIO — The city must do right by downtown businesses that have been stranded in a sea of construction. These businesses have suffered through the COVID-19 pandemic and then prolonged infrastructure work that has made getting downtown incredibly challenging.

The burden of construction projects goes beyond orange cones and “pardon our dust” signage. Torn-up streets have kept customers at bay and placed longtime downtown businesses in financial trouble. City leaders areCity Manager Erik Walsh assured the council that contractors would be held accountable in completing the projects on time — which should always be the case. But it’s what happens before construction ends that businesses need help with.
