Baseball historians recall that series as a pivotal moment in Black history. Journalists for Black newspapers jotted down each strike and base hit, Black vendors sold food and souvenirs, and Black fans cheered on Black-owned teams filled with Black players. There’s a common story told about Robinson’s bravery and the integration of Major League Baseball: One man overcame vicious hatred and excelled, changing the game for the better and forever. Every team today has retired Robinson’s jersey number. We too celebrate his heroism.Remembering the scene at Ruppert Field in 1946 reminds us, though, that integrating the all-white MLB was something more nuanced than an unambiguous moral victory. It was a victory that came with a cost.
