[EDITORIAL] Bakit galit tayo sa lumunok ng dolyares pero keber lang sa confidential funds?

May pinagkaiba ba ang lumunok ng dolyares at mga kasabwat niya sa mga opisyal na enabler ng korupsiyon?

There is something awfully wrong and worrying when a supposed independent champion of citizens proposes to shield from public scrutiny government agencies and government officials who may be committing transgressions.

Imbes na tagausig at konsiyensiya, nagiging tagapagtanggol pa ito ng mga opisyal at ahensiya na dapat ay nagpapaigting ng transparency, at sa halip ay ginagawa pa itong lalong opaque. Tila ang Ombudsman ang nagbaklas ng video cameras sa buhay ng mga kawani ng gobyerno – ginawa niyang bulag ang sambayanan at walang abilidad na silipin ang ill-gotten wealth.

At napag-uusapan na rin lang ang transparency, hindi lang sa aspeto ng auditing at pagrereport ng assets ito kumikitid. Andiyan din ang confidential funds ni Vice President at DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte na malinaw na. Tinawag rin ito ni Hofileña na “dangerous precedent.” Sabi pa niya, ito raw ay “slippery slope” habang hindi naipapatupad ang mga guardrails. Para na ring nilulon ng kadiliman ang mga pondong ito.

Nag-viral ang video ng babaeng lumulon ng dolyares. Ang tindi ng galit ng publiko sa kanya dahil sa garapalang pagnanakaw – at lalo na nang sinabi niya na tsokolate ang kanyang nilulon. Galit din ang mga tao sa mga kasabwat niya sa trabaho na nagbigay sa kanya ng senyales at nag-abot ng bottled water.

Pero sa totoo lang, may pinagkaiba ba sila sa mga opisyal na enabler ng korupsiyon? May pinag-iba ba sila sa nagpapahirap ng lifestyle checks? May pinag-iba ba sila sa gumagastos ng pera pero walang accountability, at nagtatago sa bansag na “confidential”? Nagkakaiba lang sa lawak o scale.
