Council directs staff to bring back tenant protection plans
Tenants and advocates fed up with landlord issues, lack of repairs and unjust evictions on Tuesday urged the Antioch City Council to take swift action to adopt tenant protections and anti-harassment policies.
“If we keep shoving things down people’s throats, we’re gonna get a bad outcome,” he said, noting the staff — especially the city attorney’s office — has been sretched thin in recent months. “Our children ended up sleeping on the cold, hard floor for days,” she told the council. “The managers promised to provide us with food during the day but only gave us chips and candy for a whole week.”
“I ask you to pass a just cause policy where landlords are required to pay $7,000 when people are evicted without just cause,” she said. “We also request that a minimum of 120 days notice be given to tenants; this is a critical issue.” Rae Gonzales said she’s been in her same apartment for 15 years but said her landlord has told her the mold in her place is too expensive to fix.
Hundley further identified four areas that could be addressed, including possible expansion of the city rental unit registry to include all rentals, and policies for anti-retaliation and anti-harassment and just-cause evictions.
