Though righthanded, Astros reliever Héctor Neris is nonetheless able to neutralize lefty hitters with his splitter.PHOENIX — The first series or two of a baseball season are for feeling out, games for managers to figure out a team’s identity and how certain players respond to various circumstances.
Four games against the Angels might have offered a subtle hint at some of his intentions. Houston’s bullpen threw 141/3 innings and allowed six runs. Three were unearned. Declining righthander Pedro Báez was responsible for three of the six total runs. After Montero finished the seventh inning Sunday with a strikeout of Tyler Wade, Baker had an intriguing decision. The Angels had Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout and Jared Walsh due up in the eighth inning. Houston led by a run. One school of thought suggested using closer Ryan Pressly to face the opponent’s best hitters. Baker warmed up Neris instead.
Walsh and Ohtani are lefthanded. Baker did not have southpaw Blake Taylor — he pitched Friday and Saturday — so the decision to use Neris reflected how the team views his arsenal against elite lefthanded hitters. Baker summoned Neris to face Ohtani on opening day, too, with a man on third and two outs.
