EXCLUSIVE: Henry Thomas on the re-edited 2002 release of ET 👀 'I didn't like the changes. I wasn't as concerned about the guns and walkie talkies, but I didn't like the comedic E.T. expressions that seemed out of place. I'm glad that they went back...'
Henry Thomas, who played Elliott in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, reveals his issues with the 20th Anniversary re-release of the film. The Steven Spielberg film is a cinematic classic, with Spielberg's direction and John Williams' score creating one of the most memorable movies of all time, cemented by E.T.'s induction into the United States National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1994.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Since E.T.'s release in 1982, it has endured in the cultural consciousness for decades. Though it wasn't re-edited for its 40th anniversary this year, the film did receive a 20th anniversary extended version in 2002. The "Special Edition," which is now out of circulation, utilized CGI to update some sequences, replaced the federal agents' guns with walkie-talkies, and added a few deleted scenes, including one that featured E.T. taking a bath.
I'm a fan of the original, and I didn't like the changes. I wasn't as concerned about the guns and walkie talkies, but I didn't like the comedic E.T. expressions that seemed out of place. I'm glad that they went back to the original version. It didn't marry up with the other performance, it's like two different actors.
E.T.'s 20th Anniversary Re-Release Controversies Explained While the changes and digital enhancements were minimal, even Spielberg himself doesn't stand behind the version, with the director saying in 2011 that he will refuse to digitally enhance his films in the future and that viewers should continue watching the original 1982 version over the re-edited movie. Many groups took issue with the 20th anniversary E.T.
Spielberg may have felt at the time of filming that the animatronics in 1982 where not at the level he wanted them to be for the movie, but E.T.'s staying power is enough to prove the alien worked his way into viewers' hearts regardless. With the excessive use of CGI in modern films, the practical effects in E.T. make it all the more special, helping the titular character feel a little more real in the eyes of the audience. Thomas' point about the changes to E.T.
