Josh Naylor joined José Ramírez as the only MLB teammates with at least 100 RBI each this season.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — José Ramírez and Josh Naylor are the hitters Cleveland has turned to all season in big RBI situations, and the duo has delivered time and again. Manager Stephen Vogt said “RBI guys” like Ramírez and Naylor play the game at a different speed.
Entering play on Tuesday, Ramírez and Naylor are second and third in the majors behind Aaron Judge’s 124 RBI, and are the only teammates in the big leagues with at least 100. Naylor joined Ramírez in the 100 RBI club on Monday when he swatted a two-run home run off Kris Bubic in the sixth inning of Cleveland’s 4-2 win.
In the last 50 years, only four left-handed hitters have produced 100 RBI in a season. Naylor joined Jim Thome , Travis Hafner and David Justice as the only lefties to accomplish the feat. “These are two elite hitters in our game and they play hard,” Vogt said. “They play every day and play the right way.”Gavin Williams gave Cleveland’s bullpen exactly what it needed Monday with seven strong innings, allowing just one run. Combined with similar outings from Alex Cobb and Matthew Boyd over the weekend, it marked just the second time this season Guardians starting pitchers have thrown six or more innings and given up one run or fewer in three straight outings.
“It’s been a weird year for us, but the way Gavin threw yesterday was super impressive, especially after 48 pitches through two innings,” Vogt said. “To be able to turn in seven was incredible.”
