Dutton’s call for a stop to migration from war-torn Gaza escalates the Coalition’s attack on Labor as the government prepares a visa scheme for Palestinians.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has called for a stop to migration from Gaza, saying the arrival of people from a war zone to Australia was putting national security at risk, in comments that escalate the Coalition’s attack on Labor as it prepares to unveil a visa scheme for Palestinians., urging him to ensure no known supporters of listed terrorist organisation Hamas were allowed to enter Australia.
Government Services Minister Bill Shorten said Dutton had “misfired” in his comments and there was already a process in which ASIO vetted people and conducted national security checks. Education Minister Jason Clare said no-one was currently leaving Gaza, but those who already arrived had gone through security processing.
“I’d invite Peter to come to my electorate and meet them. These are people who’ve had their homes blown up. Who’ve had their school blown up, who’ve had their hospital blown up, who’ve had their kids blown up.”
