Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has paid tribute to former prime minister Scott Morrison by saying the closing deal on AUKUS submarines for Australia “wouldn’t have been a reality” without his contribution.

“I pay tribute to him, to the work the National Security Committee did through endless hours of discussion and the work of the then Foreign Minister Maurice Paine,” Mr Dutton said.

“Our desire from the very first day of our discussions with our dearest partners in the United States and the United Kingdom was to achieve capability for our country.”
