AFL: Gillon McLachlan hits back at Chris Scott and Ross Lyon's 'disingenuous' critique of North Melbourne's draft concessions.
Ben Waterworth: Harley, we’re here at the home of football six weeks out from the draft. Is the reality your life is about to change significantly starting to kick in?
BW: You couldn’t have done much more this season, Harley: Under 18 All-Australian, Vic Country MVP, three VFL games and some big outings for the Pioneers and AFL Academy. What comes to mind first when you reflect on your 2023 campaign? HR: It’s weird. I look back at it and you see all the media about Nick Daicos when he was coming through his draft year. I looked at that then and went: ‘Whoa, I wish that was me, that’s cool.’ And then when it happens, it’s just so surreal. It doesn’t feel like it’s real.
HR: For sure. Like that WA game was huge. I thought to myself ‘I’ve actually got to play well’. It motivated me for sure. I love moments like that, I feel like it gets me up and about. And being lucky enough to co-captain them, it just gives me more to fire up the lads. At half-time we got booed heaps …
HR: I’d like to think that at contests around the stoppages, I’m pretty explosive and really physical. I love the physical attributes footy brings. Also when the game is there to be one, I’d like to think that I have another gear and stand up when the games are there to be won. And probably the teamwork mentality to be team-first. Yeah, just probably that explosive, dynamic, mid-forward type of player like a Dusty or a Danger.
HR: I do, but again all the hard work I’ve put in, I probably relied on that too. I just loved to be out there. When I’m having fun, I feel like everything clicks. Like we weren’t really close – we were still close – but I feel our relationship has been good because I think now we’re really close.
HR: Not really. At this time, I’m just happy trotting around home with my friends and getting out on the water just to get away from everything and soaking up the time while I’ve got it. Just behind the speedboat on a wakeboard, either on the Murray or the Basin … Especially this time of year when the hot weather starts ramping up.HR: Not too much to an extent. I’ve had as much time with them as any other club, so nothing different. It’s all part of it with each club, so just enjoying the ride.
HR: Ooh … I reckon it depends. A few older ones have retired, so it depends what position they’re looking for. They’ve got a good forward, they’ve got a good small forward … You couldn’t go wrong with Dan Curtin. He’s really versatile – and obviously he’s from WA, so he wouldn’t have to move too far.
