Exclusive: DungeonsAndDragonsMovie director Jonathan Goldstein explains why his favorite DnDMovie Easter egg is from the '80s cartoon:

Director Jonathan Goldstein reveals his favorite Easter egg in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is how they incorporated the party from the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. Dungeons & Dragons lasted for three seasons, with a total of twenty-seven episodes airing on CBS from 1983–1985. The series infamously ended on a cliffhanger, with the kids still searching for a way home.

In Screen Rant's exclusive interview for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Goldstein explained why he is excited for fans to see the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon characters brought to life in the movie. He also shared the challenge of bringing them into live-action without making them look too cartoonish. Check out Goldstein's thoughts below:

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Jonathan Goldstein: I think people will love seeing the '80s cartoon characters, brief as they are. There's a lot of love for those guys, and the challenge was putting them in a real-world environment where they wouldn't look like cartoon characters, because their costumes are pretty bright and goofy looking. So, we tamed it a bit.

In the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon, the main characters were young, between 9 and 14 years old, but in the movie they seem to have grown up. While the series officially ended on a cliffhanger, the script for an unproduced finale was released online, showing the kids could have returned home. This cameo could indicate that they chose to stay and create a new home in this world instead.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves shows great admiration and love for the original game, with elements of lore included throughout the film either as small Easter eggs like the animated characters brought to life or iconic dangers like the gelatinous cube. By infusing these pieces of the beloved world into Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, the film recognizes what longtime fans are excited to see brought to life on screen.
