The Kilmacud Crokes club man opens up about getting the balance right between sport and life away from GAA, the new split season and being motivated for the championship
Dublin GAA star Paul Mannion has admitted his girlfriend, family and friends have to suffer because his free time is limited during the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
Paul told RSVP Live: "It is just two months until the final so I am putting things on hold for a little bit so I can focus on football. Last year, the GAA launched a new split season with all intercounty games, including the National League and provinicial games, being staged in the first half of the year followed by club games in the second half, but this hasn't resulted in a better sport/life balance for Paul so far.
"I have had plenty of time to go away and to have holidays. I think the split season has been received hugely positively by players."He said: "For years, there weren’t enough games and there was too long between each one. It is nice to have games coming thick and fast. He said: "You need to have recognition for the good decisions that have been made. That was something that was badly needed for a long time and it will help the smaller counties to progress by keeping lads training and playing for more of the year."For players, management and fans, there are one or two more tweaks needed with the format and the timeline of when the games are played.
