Former Dublin footballer Michael Darragh Macauley mentions the Dublin 1 postcode, and that goes to the heart of what the area is up against.

When the filmmaker Alan Gilsenan followed Sean Scully - one of Ireland's greatest artists - for a documentary, he took some unexpected detours.

The year before John McCarthy played in Croke Park, Muhammad Ali fought there. It was the summer of 1972, the height of the Troubles. A year later, McCarthy wore the sky blue of Dublin for the first time. McCarthy had so many Sundays on Jones's Road with the Dubs, now it's all about Wednesdays with the Dubs on Shelbourne Road.

When the recent general election was called, both Taoiseach Simon Harris and his predecessor Micheál Martin headed to the Aviva that Friday night to canvass rugby fans before Ireland's game with the All Blacks. When Gerry Hutch ran for election in Dublin Central, he kept a remarkably low profile. One of the only interviews he did was with Channel 4 news. Just two questions, and they were agreed in advance.

“Let’s talk about why Dublin is not safe. There are so many immigrants on the street selling drugs. You walk down O’Connell Street today, spot the Dub,'' he said. "That's absolute shite to try and blame what's happening in the area on a small cohort of people. It's categorically not true. I've spent the last six years walking around Ballybough, Sean McDermott Street, Sheriff Street and I see what's happening,'' he said.

"I think Dubliners are beginning to be removed not only from the rest of the country, but also from Dublin itself. The cost of living crisis and housing issues mean that many Dubliners can’t live in Dublin,'' said Curran. Hutch's candidature meant Dublin Central got plenty of focus during the election and Gavin points out that the area has suffered since way before the foundation of the State, going back to the Act of Union in 1800.

"Everything from health to education to employment were factors. Mulvey put together a report and, from that, the government put together the North East Inner City Initiative.
