Scott Franklin is an orthodontist by day and a volunteer football coach by night.
PUBLISHED 10:55 AM CDT Aug. 12, 2023AUSTIN, Texas — During the football season, Scott Franklin usually starts his day well before 6 a.m. He’s at his office and seeing patients by 7 a.m. He’s there until about 3 p.m. before heading out to his second full-time job: coaching football at Regents School in Austin.
So Franklin decided he wanted to take care of teeth. He went to school to study dental surgery and orthodontics, which led him to opening his own practice, Smiles of Austin, in 1996. He has grown that business and expanded to open an office in Dripping Springs.While Franklin enjoys his career in dentistry, he says there was always another part of his personality that kept pulling him back to football and possibly coaching.
“If you’re on the sidelines on Friday nights, you’re going to fall in love with it,” says Franklin. “Obviously the rest is history. I got the bug that year.” It’s a similar story for many of the coaches at Regents. On a staff of 19, most of them are volunteers with other full-time jobs.
