The Warbeck family and the Vanderee family sat on opposite sides of the courtroom Thursday. One family sought a measure of justice. The other begged for mercy. Both families were bound by tragedy, both families would have their say in court. Of raising children, she said, ‘their joy is your joy. Their pain is your pain....and their death is your death.” The mother added, “I don’t dream anymore. It feels surreal to wake up without him.”
Vanderee was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and had his license suspended. The drug charges were dropped as part of a conditional discharge, but he kept using drugs, the sentencing report said. Vanderee’s attorney, John Bruno, told the judge that on the morning of the crash, his client had scheduled an appointment to get a shot of Vivitrol, a drug that quells the craving for opioids. But he arrived late for the appointment and was rescheduled until later in the day.
