The driver of a Tesla was killed and nine others were injured in an eight-car pileup at around 2:10 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 95 near Miami.
The Tesla was headed southbound on the highway when its driver, a Black adult male unnamed by officials, lost control of the car and crashed into a concrete barrier, disabling the Tesla and sending the car into the middle of the road. The driver of an oncoming Nissan attempted to avoid the Tesla driver, but then the Nissan was struck by a Chevrolet SUV. The force of that collision pushed the Nissan forward, running over the man in the road.
After those three collisions, a series of minor impacts occurred between another Chevrolet SUV, another Nissan, a white Jeep SUV, a tow truck, and a gray Jeep SUV, according to Miami TV station WTVJ. The Tesla driver would be pronounced dead at the scene by first responders, with nine other people involved suffering injuries. Emergency personnel transported five people to the hospital — the other four injured refused to go.The crashes caused miles of backup on I-95 in Miami, with drivers all being redirected to exit onto 62nd Street. The southbound lanes of I-95 were only reopened at 8:28 a.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation of the initial crash and subsequent pileup.
