Demarao Gumby Jr. had found a new home in Penbrook last year after bouncing among foster homes for six years. He was killed while visiting the city Saturday June 18, 2022 near N. 16th and Park streets.
Shaquille Moore filed paperwork to become a foster parent with the goal of adopting his younger brother. He wasn’t intending to foster other children.
Demarao loved his biological family and kept in close touch with them as he settled into his new home in Penbrook with Moore and four new brothers, ages 6 to 18. His sister Iyanna Puglia was too heartbroken to speak at length, but told PennLive her brother “brought smiles to everyone that he came around.”
Demarao had just completed the school year at the Yellow Breeches Educational Center and was planning to transition to Central Dauphin East High School in the fall, where he wanted to play football.
