New research associates sugar-sweetened beverages with early mortality — but artificially-sweetened beverages are not much safer, especially for women.

How sweet it isn’t — drinking sugary drinks has been associated with a greater risk of death from cardiovascular disease, especially among women, according to a new report from the American Heart Association’s journal, Circulation.

Those who drank two or more sugary drinks a day were associated with a 31% increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and an 18% increased risk of cancer death in both men and women, compared to those who drank less than one sugar sweetened beverage a month. But when sorted by gender, the syrupy sips appeared especially harmful for women: Those who had more than two a day saw a 63% increased risk of early death, while men who did the same saw a 29% increase in risk.

Two of the biggest sweetened beverage makers, Coca Cola Co. KO, +0.24% and PepsiCo PEP, +1.39% , did not respond to MarketWatch requests for comment by publication time.
