Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon on Monday said the government should look at the effect of online sabong or e-sabong on Filipinos’ moral fiber.

In an ANC interview, Drilon lamented the disappearance of 34 cockfight enthusiasts, saying that these cases should be investigated as it was a “slap on our rule of law.”“They did not just disappear out of the air. Having said that, the effect of online sabong on the moral fiber of our people must be closely examined, especially we are not talking here about small money,” Drilon said.

He recalled the statement of gaming tycoon Atong Ang, one of the e-sabong licensees involved in the case, disclosing that the daily gross bets in his platform“That is, to me, a very conservative amount because with the convenience of money transfers on the cellphones, betting on the cellphones. This has never happened in the past. I would suspect that the gross bets is much more than this,” he said.

“So the effect on our moral fiber is indeed something that we should consider, that we have to look at,” he added. The Senate earlier called for the suspension of e-sabong licenses pending resolution of the missing sabungeros case.. Instead, the Palace ordered an investigation to be conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police.
